Madingley Homestead

Madingley Homestead has been our home since 2002. My husband Brodie and I are the custodians of this land, but we’ve been delighted to share our home with many others during the last 20+ years.

Our two children (now adults), my elderly mother, our daughter-in-law, and our two granddaughters have all lived here at various times creating a multi-generational family home. Short visits from family, friends and numerous WWOOF volunteers have also enriched this place.

It’s a peaceful permaculture homestead in the Lockyer Valley in SE Queensland just a 10-minute drive from the city of Toowoomba. It’s a productive property where we grow food to nourish family and friends.

As semi-retired educators, we strive to live a simple life and enjoy active involvement as members of Permaculture Toowoomba Inc.

Our permaculture garden has slowly evolved, and the house and outdoor living spaces have been retrofitted over time.  We have grid-connected solar power and we’re independent of other external connections with a bio-septic system that recycles all waste, and tanks for rainwater storage.

It’s a 5-acre (2-hectare) Land for Wildlife property bisected by seasonal Rocky Creek with challenging growing conditions (low rainfall, dry frosty winters, and hot summers).

Permaculture Garden

Highlights of our productive garden include the:

  • kitchen garden
  • holistic fruit orchard
  • Asian-inspired food garden
  • aromatic apothecary garden
  • native bushfood garden
  • integrated poultry systems (heritage chickens, geese, turkeys, Muscovy, quail, and guinea fowl)
  • wildlife habitat areas (with nest boxes, frog hotel, lizard lounge, native bee hives), and
  • a riparian wildlife corridor along the creek with abundant native birds.

Our focus is on sustainable living with permaculture ethics (Earth Care, People Care, Fair Share) at the heart of our daily lives and ethical choices.  We believe that nature is our greatest teacher, and we use the permaculture design principles as a framework to evolve and nurture our property.  This includes many perennial plants that create ecosystem stability and provide food for humans and wildlife, with a few quick-growing annual vegetables and herbs in our kitchen gardens.
